A Russian court jailed a military officer working in its strategic missile programme for 13 years on charges of spying for the United States, Russia's FSB security service said.

The FSB said Lieutenant-Colonel Vladimir Nesterets, who worked as an engineer at Plesetsk launch pad in northern Russia, pleaded guilty to passing sensitive information about Russia's strategic missiles to US intelligence services.

"During the hearings, Nesterets pleaded guilty to of passing classified information about the latest Russian strategic missiles to the CIA," an FSB statement said.

The agency did not provide any more details on the charges.
