An RUC officer suffered head injuries after being hit by a missile during a riot at a bonfire in Portadown last night.

A number of petrol bombs and other missiles were thrown as RUC officers tried to disperse a crowd of 70 youths which had placed material from the bonfire across the Corcorane Road in Portadown.

The road was closed while police officers dealt with the disorder. The officer’s injuries are not thought to be serious.

The trouble flared hours after the Orange Order announced it is to re-enter talks with residents of the Garvaghy Road over the disputed annual parade from Drumcree Church in July.
