RTE has issued an apology to the sports drug-testing official at the centre of the Michelle de Bruin case, Mr Al Guy, over comments made by a guest on Today with Pat Kenny last year. In a statement read on the programme yesterday, RTE apologised for any upset or distress caused to Mr Guy by comments made by Mr Vincent Modahl, whose wife, Diane, was at the centre of a separate drugs controversy.

It is believed Mr Guy also received compensation of some £50,000 from RTE. However, a spokeswoman for the company was unable confirm or deny this. E not to discuss the details of any legal settlement.

Mr Guy was one of the officials on a British Athletics Federation panel which found Ms Modahl, a runner, guilty of drug-taking six years ago. That verdict was later overturned in an appeal.

It was the random drug test which Mr Guy, along with his wife Kay, carried out at Michelle de Bruin's Kilkenny home in January 1998, which led to de Bruin receiving a four-year ban.
