RTÉ is to make cutbacks worth almost £25 million across all its operations to stave off its current financial difficulties, it was announced this afternoon.

Even with these cutbacks, the State owned broadcaster expects to lose at least £12 million next year.

Union representatives were told this afternoon that cash reserves have fallen and if escalating costs remain unchecked, the station will have to borrow by the middle of next year.

Advertising revenue was down by £12 million this year, and a projected drop of £15.5 million in 2002.

The station said its core offerings of two television channels and four radio channels are not under threat. RTÉ’s plans for digital services will also go ahead.
