A Garda investigation is under way in Monaghan following the discovery of eight rotting animal carcasses in fields along the main Dublin-Derry N2 road, just north of Emyvale, Co Monaghan, two miles from the Border.
The carcasses, seven sheep and one cow, were discovered in a badly decomposed state in fields owned by the same farmer. The chairman of Monaghan IFA, Mr Gene Sherry, said this was a horrifying find that put at risk the health of people and animals in the area.
