Mrs Mary Robinson, the UN Human Rights Commissioner, has been named "European of the Year" by a French Catholic weekly, La Vie. The magazine said that Mrs Robinson, the former President, was selected in recognition of her role as "a bearer of the values of our culture".

Mr Jacques Delors, former president of the European Commission, chaired the jury which selected Mrs Robinson.

La Vie has a circulation of 250,000.
