Ireland's longest-serving Catholic bishop, Dr Francis McKiernan (72), the Bishop of Kilmore, retired yesterday. From Stradrinan near Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, he is succeeded by Dr Leo O'Reilly (54), Coadjutor Bishop of the diocese since 1996. Kilmore is a cross-Border diocese which takes in most of Co Cavan, parts of Leitrim, Meath and Sligo, and three parishes in Fermanagh.
