Replaced statue of tsar angers Latvians

Riga - The start of 800th anniversary celebrations of the Latvian capital Riga were marred yesterday by calls for the resignation of its mayor after he put back on display a bronze statue of Russian tsar Peter the Great. Mayor Gundars Bojars had the 91-year-old statue placed overnight in a central city park, sparking outrage and calls for his resignation from across the political spectrum. He told journalists the statue was unveiled in honour of a visiting delegation from St Petersburg.
