The man who died on the Kerry mountains on Sunday evening has been named as Mr Niall Purcell (28), an employee of a computer firm, from Cork city.

His death brings to four the number who have lost their lives on the MacGillycuddy's Reeks since Christmas. All of the dead are from Cork city and county.

It appears Mr Purcell may have been trying to take a photograph and lost his footing when he fell 600ft from the top of a ridge overlooking Lough Googh (Cuckoo Lake) near the Black Valley. Rescuers have described the incident as "a freak accident" and have warned that there is always an element of risk on the mountains.

Around 20 of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, some of whom had just finished a long walk in the exact area, made their way to the scene, undertaking a three-hour walk to get to Mr Purcell. The Coast Guard rescue helicopter was called out and was able to winch the dead man out of the area to bring him to Tralee General Hospital.

The spot where Mr Purcell fell to his death is not far from where Mr John Lucey, the general secretary of PDFORRA, the armed forces' representative organisation, and Ms Joan O'Leary, a manager with Rehab, lost their lives on January 6th last in a double tragedy.

Two weeks before that, Mr Warren O'Brien, from Cobh, died when he fell from a ridge on nearby Carrauntoohil.
