Minister for Justice Alan Shatter is to examine ways of speeding up the Thornton Hall prison project in Co Dublin after new figures showed the number of people committed to prison reaching record levels.

Some 11,285 people were jailed last year. Mr Shatter told Labour TD Patrick Nulty it was his “strong intention to revisit the timeframe” this year.
