Brazilian World Cup winner Ronaldo was officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player today and immediately pledged to repay the European champions' €45 million investment with a feast of goals.
"I thank the president of Real Madrid and I would like to say that my desire to come here was great. I know there is a big responsibility but I hope to respond with goals and great play," said the former Inter Milan player who was presented with a number 11 shirt by club president Florentino Perez.
Perez said that Ronaldo, who scored both goals in Brazil's 2-0 World Cup final win against Germany in the summer, was destined to be a great star at the Bernabeu Stadium.
"This is a very important day for Real. Ronaldo is here because he wanted to come. We mustn't forget the sacrifices he has made and his love for Real. Here, you receive the same love that you give.
"Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world and I am sure you will be the author of more glorious chapters to make sure that the team voted the best of the 20th century will continue to be the same in the 21st century.
Despite the cheerful welcome, fans of the nine-times European champions will have to wait until the end of the month to see him in action.
"I'm very happy to be in Madrid finally and I'm ready to start training but I need to prepare athletically although everything is fine. Twenty days and I'll be ready to play," Ronaldo said.
