Quinn Group was founded by Seán Quinn in 1973. Initially a small quarrying operation, the privately held entity expanded into a global company with interests in cement and concrete, general and health insurance, plastics, hospitality and real estate.
Quinn Insurance is one of 13 divisions in the Quinn Group. It was founded in 1996 and is now the State’s second largest insurer.
Quinn Insurance offers home, health, motor and public liability insurance. All of these come under the remit of Quinn Insurance Ltd, which was put into administration yesterday.
Quinn’s life insurance division, Quinn Life, is not affected by yesterday’s move.
Quinn Insurance holds 23 per cent of the health insurance market in Ireland, with VHI holding 64 per cent and Aviva holding 10 per cent. It has just under 19 per cent of the motor insurance market, 3 per cent of the home and commercial property insurance market and just under 13 per cent of the combined employers and public liability insurance market.
Quinn Insurance employs almost 2,800 people in Ireland and Britain out of a total workforce of 8,000 in the Quinn Group overall.
Quinn Insurance has centres in Cavan, Enniskillen, Navan, Blanchardstown, Cork and Manchester.
