A police photographer allegedly swindled the PSNI out of more than £120,000 (€167,600) in fake overtime and mileage claims, Belfast magistrates court heard yesterday.

Fergus Grant (40) was also accused of submitting fraudulent tax returns worth over £33,000, and stealing cameras and equipment valued at £13,000 from the force.

The former senior imaging officer faces a total of eight charges, including others of possessing counterfeit currency and making nearly 1,500 pirate DVDs.

Mr Grant, of Orangefield Avenue, Belfast, spoke only to confirm he understood the alleged offences against him, which cover a six-year period stretching back to January 2001.

Mr Grant, a civilian member of staff who ran day-to-day operations at the PSNI's photography department based in Knocknagoney, Belfast, is understood to have now left the unit.

He was also charged with dishonestly obtaining another £33,428 from revenue and customs by putting in fraudulent income tax and VAT returns between 2002 and 2006.

The case was adjourned.
