The PSNI does not believe that a fire yesterday at the Lough Erne hotel and golf resort, a possible venue for next year’s G8 summit of world leaders, was started deliberately.
Shortly before 7am, six fire tenders were called to the resort on the shores of Lough Erne to deal with the fire in the main hotel building.
Fire crews said there was an “intense fire” in the spa and pool area of the hotel. Hotel staff had evacuated guests before fire tenders arrived.
An investigation has begun into what caused the fire, but at this stage police do not believe it was malicious.
It emerged last week that the hotel is being seriously considered as a venue next year for the G8 summit of world leaders.
It is the British government’s turn to host the summit next summer, and there is speculation that British prime minister David Cameron may make an announcement about the summit shortly.
The G8 members are the UK, the United States, Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Japan.
Were the Lough Erne complex of a 59-room hotel, 25 lodges and two golf courses – one designed by Nick Faldo – given the nod, it could mean world leaders such as Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin converging on Co Fermanagh next summer.
