A French prosecutor yesterday urged that a four-year jail term be imposed on an Irishman on trial in Paris for allegedly helping the IRA prepare guerrilla attacks in London in 1996. Paul MacGarrigle (41) faces up to 10 years in prison on charges of criminal conspiracy in connection with a terrorist enterprise.
The prosecutor, Mr Remi Chaise, said Mr MacGarrigle had maintained close ties with IRA activists while in France, but the defendant's lawyers insisted during the trial that he had ended all IRA-related activities after moving to Paris in 1990. The defence is expected to present final arguments in the case later today.
