Martin McDermott (26), who fled across the Border eight months into a sentence for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin, has been extradited back to the Republic.
Police in Belfast confirmed yesterday that McDermott was handed over to the authorities in the Republic to serve out the rest of his term for killing Garda McLoughlin.
After absconding, McDermott was later arrested in Derry and then jailed for four months for assaulting PSNI officers, resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour.
The garda died when his patrol car was struck at speed by a stolen car driven by McDermott at Burt, Co Donegal, in December 2009.
McDermott, from Raphoe, Co Donegal, escaped from Loughan House prison in Blacklion, Co Cavan, on March 15th.
He was later detained in the Galliagh area of Derry, where he tried to escape police by climbing a wall and then running off.
He was jailed for eight years – one of them suspended – for Garda McLoughlin’s manslaughter. – (PA)
