A prisoner suffered serious stab wounds and four prison officers received hospital treatment after an incident involving two groups of inmates at Mountjoy prison in Dublin yesterday.
The disturbance occurred at about 11am on the prison’s B wing. Prison staff intervened and brought the situation under control quickly, according to the Prison Service.
One prisoner was brought to hospital with serious stab wounds, while seven were treated in Mountjoy for superficial injuries.
Four prison officers required hospital treatment. One had a suspected broken arm, one a head wound, and the two remaining officers suffered lacerations.
The disturbance follows an incident earlier yesterday at Castlerea prison in Co Roscommon, in which a prison officer was injured. The incident occurred shortly after 5am when, according to prison sources, a remand prisoner had what is understood to have been a psychotic incident.
A number of staff were dealing with the situation when the officer was hurt. He is believed to have received a facial injury. He was brought to University Hospital Galway for treatment and has since been released.
