The President, Mrs McAleese, left Ireland for Helsinki today to begin the first official visit by an Irish head of state to Finland and Estonia.

In Helsinki she will meet the President Ms Tarja Halonen and visit parliament. Tomorrow she will have talks with Prime Minister Mr Paavo Lipponen and address the Paasikivi Society, a foreign policy institute.

On Thursday she will visit a technology centre in Espoo before travelling to Tallin where she will be welcomed by Estonian President Mr Lennart Meri.

She will also meet members of parliament and Tallin mayor Mr Juri Mois.

On Friday Mrs McAleese travels to Tartu where she will visit the university and a number of cultural institutions, before returning on Saturday to Ireland.
