Power has been restored to thousands of households in the east and southeast of the country following the outages that occurred due to a series of lightning strikes overnight.

A spokesman for the ESB has confirmed that power has been restored to all customers since 3pm this afternoon.

Several thousand households and businesses in counties Louth, Waterford, Wexford, and Kilkenny had their power supply cut as a result of the lightning.

Initial fears that transformer stations had been damaged proved groundless.
