A postmortem examination on the body of a woman found dead in Galway city is expected to take place later this evening.
The woman, who was in her early 20s, was found dead in an apartment in the city.
The discovery was made by gardaí from Galway Garda station who were called to the apartment on Father Griffin Avenue at around 6.30am.
A man, also in his early 20s, was taken from the scene to University College Hospital Galway with head injuries. He was later released from hospital and arrested by gardai.
He is being questioned detained at Mill Street Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, where he can be held for up to 12 hours.
The scene in the apartment has been preserved for technical examination.
A Garda spokesman confirmed the body is still at the scene and that the State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, is expected to carry out an examination this evening.
