The Garda in Longford are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a man¿s body in an apartment block in the town.

The man, who was in his late 50s, was found in a stairwell of the apartments in Ballymahon Street at around 4 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body was removed to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar where the Assistant State Pathologist Dr Maire Cassidy carried out a post mortem examination this afternoon.

A garda spokesman said the scene has been preserved for forensic examination.

Details of the dead man's identity have not yet been released, but it is understood he was from the Dublin area and had been living in Longford.
