London - Labour yesterday seized on an opinion poll which suggests that nearly half of Scottish voters favour the idea of independence but most are happy to settle for devolution.

The Scottish First Minister, Mr Donald Dewar, claimed the findings were the latest in a line of setbacks for the Scottish National Party and that support for independence was "ebbing away". The SNP claimed the findings represented a "significant shift" in its favour.
