Sinn Féin to run three election candidates in Co Donegal

Party decides to add another name to its ticket in the five-seat constituency

Sinn Féin has agreed to run three general election candidates in Co Donegal.

The party decided this weekend to add another name to the ticket in the five-seat constituency.

Sitting TDs Pearse Doherty and Pádraig MacLochlainn have already been selected to run.

Cllr Gary Doherty is expected to be chosen to join them at a selection convention next month.

Mr Doherty said securing three seats in the five-seat constituency is possible, but the strategy could be a risky one for the party.

‘Seat in jeopardy’

Speaking on Highland Radio, Mr Doherty said: “We sat down and considered that for quite a while and, because we’re sending three candidates now, [it] does put either myself or Pádraig’s seat in jeopardy.

“We believe that there is enough votes to elect two TDs for Donegal, as we currently have, but believe that there is scope to pursue that third seat.

“That leaves a big question as to who is the person who will lose out if we do only secure two, so that’s something we have to put our own personal ambitions behind us for.”

The Sinn Féin selection convention will likely be on Sunday, November 8th.
