The "millennium bug" could cost the Irish economy an estimated £1 billion, if the State's computer systems are not properly adjusted, the Fine Gael leader, Mr John Bruton, warned. He said the problem relating to information technology could pose a major problem for the health services and business, with the ESB estimating the cost of making the necessary adjustments could be £10 million.

The Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, said he was aware that many of the computers in private industry, as well as the State system, were not capable of taking the necessary level of change. A working group had been set up with the Department to examine and assess information systems.
