The setting up of a national sports council was called for by the Fine Gael spokesman on tourism, sport and recreation, Mr Bernard Allen.

Moving a Bill in private member's time providing for the establishment of a council, he said that the wide range of sporting activities and the depth of voluntary effort would be enhanced by the establishment of a council.

The Minister of State for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Mr Chris Flood, said the Government's legislative proposals for the establishment of a sports council were at an advanced stage.
