A more optimistic view of the European Union is emerging in Ireland, according to research from the European Commission.

The latest Eurobarometer shows that 53 per cent of Irish people have a “positive” image of the EU, up 12 points since spring 2014. This is the highest number of people saying this since 2009.

On the economy, most people (60 per cent) say the situation is “bad” but this figure is down from 81 per cent a year ago.

“Overall, the latest findings tell us that confidence in the EU is re-emerging,” the commission said. “Looking ahead, Irish feelings about the EU will probably continue to be closely linked to perceptions about economic performance.”
