Warsaw - The head of the Catholic Church in Poland, Cardinal Jozef Glemp, yesterday strongly criticised a government decision to allow Sunday trading in Poland, a predominantly Catholic country.

"Sunday is a working day for slaves," said the cardinal, commenting on last week's decision by Poland's lower house of parliament to allow shops to remain open on Sundays. The decision comes amid a growing trend among Polish families to spend Sundays together at the local shopping centre.
