The driver of the Subaru Impreza was also taken to hospital after ploughing into the officer and a police car. Neither of their conditions was believed to be life threatening.

Two men who jumped out of the stolen car and fled were later arrested. The 25 and 27-year-old were being questioned about the stolen car — reported missing from Newtownabbey on Tuesday.

They were also being quizzed about a break-in at a house in Newry and the theft of a car from the drive in the early hours of the morning.

The police officer was hit while responding to reports of attempts to steal a car at Toll House Park, said a police spokeswoman.

A car previously stolen after a break-in at Newry's Bernish Crescent was also recovered at the scene.

Just before 3am two men broke into a house at Bernish Crescent and took a number of handbags and the keys of a black Toyota in which they drove off.
