Young Fine Gael is running a campaign at summer music festivals to encourage young people to register to vote.

The Stand Up And Be Counted campaign was launched yesterday by party leader Enda Kenny, who said he believed it would significantly increase the number of young people voting in next year's election.

Young Fine Gael members will travel to music festivals, such as the Electric Picnic and Hi:Fi and other events likely to attract young audiences.

Mr Kenny was joined by Young Fine Gael's president Elizabeth Munnelly; Meath TD Damien English, the youngest member of the Dáil, and Carlow-Kilkenny Senator John Paul Phelan, the youngest member of the Seanad.

In that election just six TDs aged under 30 were elected, five of them for Fine Gael.

"Decisions are made by those who turn up, and FG wants to ensure that every young person who is eligible to vote can automatically do so. Ireland has one of the youngest populations in Europe, yet all too often our young people's opinions have been overlooked," said Mr Kenny.
