American Football:  The New England Patriots have become only the second team ever to record a perfect NFL season.

Bill Belichik's all-conquering outfit beat the New York Giants 38-35 last night to cap a stunning 16-0 clean sweep of their regular-season games.

They emulated the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who went 14-0 in the regular season en route to a Super Bowl title.

Tom Brady and Randy Moss both set single-season TD records in the process, hooking up for two more scores.

A four-yarder in the second period and a 65-yarder in the fourth gave Brady 50 TD passes for the season, beating Peyton Manning's record.

And Moss surpassed Jerry Rice (22) in reaching 23 TD catches.

The Giants came into the game already assured of a playoff berth, but despite having little to play for they made it tough for New England and roared into a 28-16 third-quarter lead.

Eli Manning threw four TD passes as New York threatened to spoil the party for the Patriots.

But from 28-16 down Brady steered New England to 22 unanswered points and a place in immortality.

On the night he finished with 356 passing yards and those two TD passes, while Moss had six catches for 100 yards and two scores.

The Patriots also broke the record for most points scored in a season, finishing on 589 to surpass the 1998 Minnesota Vikings.
