Representatives of political parties are set to meet today to agree guidelines for a Dáil debate on this morning’s announcement that the Government is to guarantee all bank deposits and certain debt in six Irish banks.

In a statement, Government Chief Whip Pat Carey said contacts were being made with other party whips with a view to holding the meeting at 1pm. A Government spokesman said it was intended to hold the Dáil debate today.

“I am hopeful that agreement can be found between the Government and the Opposition to have a debate in the Dáil this evening which explains the decision taken this morning by the Government to safeguard the Irish banking system,” Mr Carey said.
