A Palestinian woman has been sentenced to 320 years in prison by an Israeli military court for her role in a suicide bombing that killed 15 people.

Jordanian-born Ahlam Tamimi, 23, was the first woman to be recruited by the Izzadine el-Qassam Brigades - the military wing of the Islamic Hamas movement.

The prosecution said she helped plan last year's bombing of the packed Sbarro pizzeria in Jerusalem and escorted the suicide bomber to the site, where he set off a powerful charge in the guitar case he was carrying.

Among the dead in what the court judgment called "a satanic act" were toddlers, teenagers and elderly. Two of the victims were American.

Hamas has claimed responsibility for most of the 104 suicide bombings against Israelis during the current three-year campaign, killing more than 400 people.

The court said that Tamimi, who joined Hamas while a media student at a West Bank university, had planted a bomb in a Jerusalem supermarket a month before. That blast caused extensive damage but no injuries.

She was sentenced to one 20-year life term for each of the Sbarro victims and one more for her other activities.
