Palestinian gunmen shot dead an Israeli civilian guard near a West Bank Jewish settlement today, Israel Radio and an emergency medical service said.
The shooting, outside the settlement of Ariel, occurred a day after Israeli Prime Minister Mr Ariel Sharon called for a ceasefire in eight months of Israeli-Palestinian violence.
Israeli police said Palestinian gunmen fired at a car carrying an Israeli building contractor and his security guard. The guard was killed and the contractor wounded.
