Two eastern Europeans who made a desperate attempt to seek refuge in Ireland by slitting their wrists have sought asylum in the country.

According to a garda spokeswoman the men have lodged an asylum application and as a result will not be deported.

The men cut themselves with pieces of glass on arrival in Cork Airport last Saturday as security officials questioned them over their documents.

The men, both in their early thirties, were detained over the weekend in Cork Prison.
