A Japanese express train carrying hundreds of passengers has rammed a passenger train in southwestern Japan injuring at least 50 people.

The crash in Munakata city happened when a speeding train rear-ended another train that had stopped between stations.

Public broadcaster NHK television said about 20 passengers on the express train and at least 30 on the stationary train were injured.

Munakata is in Fukuoka prefecture on Japan's southern island of Kyushu.
