A Belfast libel lawyer has secured a retraction and apology for Hollywood star Nicolas Cage over false newspaper allegations of tax evasion, in one of the fastest cases of its kind.
Paul Tweed also negotiated undisclosed damages from the publishers of the Daily Mail’s online edition in favour of the actor. Cage, who won a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of a suicidal alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas, sued over a story published last month. The article centred on how late he was in returning DVDs hired out from his local rental store.
But the actor, famous for his roles in Ghostrider, Bad Lieutenant, Con Air, National Treasure and The Rock, issued proceedings over other claims made by the MailOnline.
His lawyer said Cage remained very concerned that “such a false and outrageous headline should have been published in the first place”.
