A car exploded in northern Israel today during a long chase by police who suspected it was carrying terrorists about to detonate a car bomb, police said.

An ambulance spokesman said one person was killed and nine were injured. Police spokesman Mr Bentsi Saud said four of the injured were in the car which had been spotted in the centre of the country by police who gave chase.

He said police blocked off the road near Umm al-Fahm, a northern Israeli Arab city, when the blast occurred.

A witness described the car as a taxi. The explosion was inside the car, he said, adding that the other six wounded were outside the car.

A witness said two cars collided after the blast.
