One out of every ten Dubliners between the age of 21 and 40 has used heroin, a survey published today claims.
The survey also reveals that 25 per cent in the same age group have used cocaine. One in ten admitted to using both drugs regularly, the survey carried out by NewsTalk 106 suggests.
The survey also reveals that those aged between 21 and 29 are more likely to have tried cocaine (29 per cent) in comparison to 30 - 40 year olds (19 per cent).
Heroin is almost three times as likely to have been tried by men rather than women (13 per cent versus 5 per cent). Some 59 per cent of those questioned have tried cannabis, with more than one in 10 doing so regularly.
When asked whether they have ever used cannabis, cocaine or heroin, Sinn Fein supporters topped the poll for each drug, with 46 per cent of the party's supporters admitting to having taken cocaine, in comparison to 16 per cent of Fine Gael supporters and 19 per cent having taken heroin in comparison to 8 per cent of Fianna Fail supporters.
The survey was compiled using 500 self completion interviews among a random representative sample of people aged between 21 and 40 living in Dublin, at a number of sites across the city between January 22nd and 27th, 2004.
