The device that exploded was believed to have been made from fireworks packed into a ballcock.

The man was later being questioned. But police are understood not to be linking the incident to any terrorist activity.

The man, carrying a black binliner, was seen acting suspiciously in St George's Street.

Passer-by Mr Cliff Unsworth, in his 40s, from Bolton, challenged the man, who threw the device to the ground, where it exploded. No damage was believed to have been caused.

Mr Unsworth held the man until police arrived. His injuries were not believed to be serious.
