Gardaí and customs officers have broken a major oil laundering operation.

More than 20,000 litres of oil with an estimated value of €16,000 was seized during a raid at Clontibret, Co Monaghan.

A lorry, a van and other equipment including 12 thousand-litre drums, lengths of piping and various pumps were also seized.

Gardaí were called to the premises last night and one person was arrested and
questioned. Investigations are continuing.

A customs spokesman said the oil laundry had the capacity to launder 30,000 litres per week with a potential loss of revenue running to €750,000  a year.
