The Uruguayan ship's officer who was injured in a deck accident off the Mayo coast earlier this week remained in a "critical but stable condition" in hospital in Galway last night.

Mr Carlos Hernanvez Bena had part of his leg amputated in the accident which claimed the lives of two of his colleagues on the 65,000 ton tanker Princess Eva.

All three were trying to secure a liferaft on the deck of the ship in Force 11 winds, 140 miles off Eagle Island, Co Mayo, when a wave hit the ship and threw them against the superstructure.

One man died almost instantly, another died later after sustaining serious head injuries, and Mr Bena lost part of his leg. The bodies of the two men, who were senior ship's officers, were taken ashore at Killybegs, Co Donegal, yesterday afternoon, and removed to Letterkenny General Hospital.

The two have been named as Pedro Sanchez and Andres Manrique, both from Argentina.

The Princess Eva came into McSwyne's Bay off Donegal yesterday morning to facilitate the transfer. The ship was due to stay in the Donegal Bay area last night without anchoring while waiting for relief crew to arrive.

The Princess Eva had been en route from Copenhagen, Denmark, to Corpus Christi, near Houston, Texas, when the accident occurred.
