Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan and Mark Carroll have been pre-selected for the World Cross Country Championships at Leopardstown racecourse in March.

O'Sullivan is back in training after having her second child last month while Carroll is preparing for the event after a lengthy spell on the sidelines through injury.

Neither athlete has confirmed which distance they will compete over, although it is believed Carroll will run the short-course event.

Seamus Power and Anne Keenan-Buckley are the other two Irish athletes to be pre-selected for the Leopardstown feature.

Power finished fourth behind Kenyan Julius Kibet at the Belfast international cross country meeting last week. Keenan-Buckley was the winner of this year's Rás na hÉireann.

The World Cross Country Championships was originally scheduled for Leopardstown racecourse in March 2001 but was postponed for a year due to the foot-and-mouth scare. The meeting will be held on the weekend of March 23rd and March 24th.

O'Sullivan, who will announce her racing schedule over the next few weeks, is also expected to run in the Balmoral Road Race on Easter Saturday.

Race organiser Peter Elliott has held preliminary talks with O'Sullivan.

"I have spoken with Sonia and her agent and I understand she is very keen to take part," he said.
