Athletics:IIreland's Derval O'Rourke successfully came through the heats of the 60m hurdles at the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul.

O'Rourke, however, had an anxious wait until all four heats were completed to find out that she had made it through to tomorrow afternoon's (3.10pm) semi-finals as the fastest loser.

She came fourth in the first race of the afternoon in a time of 8.19 seconds, with Female Athlete of the Year, Australia's Sally Pearson winning it in 7.85 seconds.

The time was well off O'Rourke's winning run in Moscow six years ago, where she won the gold medal in a time of 7.84 seconds.

It was also slower than her 2012 best of 8.16 seconds, which would rank her well out side the medal contenders.

O'Rourke had some fitness issues with her feet going into the championships, which forced her to withdraw from two races last month.

Ciaran O'Lionaird finished 11th in his morning heat of the 1500 metres.

The Olympic hopeful, who came 10th in the World Championships in Daegu last summer, recently ran an indoor mile in 3:54.76, which made him a potential finalist.

But the Irishman had one of those bad days and never got into the race. From the beginning he failed to settle in to the tempo of the leading runners.

He trailed at the back of the back for the first three laps before inching towards the front and finally tucking into fourth position running in an outside lane.

But by the half way mark of what was a slow enough race, O’Lionaird had again slipped away to the back of the competitive field.

Ilham Ozbilen picked up the pace after the group had passed the half way mark in a sluggish 2:04.00.

By then O’Lionaird was far out of contention and finally fell away completely, the first three home led by Ozbilen in a winning time of 3:41.93 automatically qualifying.

O’Lionaird's final finishing time was 3:50.1.
