A Roman Catholic priest was treated in hospital today after an attempted robbery at his parochial house in Northern Ireland.

The priest suffered a hand injury when two men kicked in the door of his home in Upper Dunmurray Lane, Dunmurray.

The men also used an axe to smash a safety chain on the door before following the priest into a study.

They then demanded money but left empty handed when the priest told them he had contacted police.

A spokeswoman for the PSNI said it was believed the two men made off in a dark coloured saloon car, which had two other men in it.

"A second unidentified car is also thought to have been in the area at the time," he added.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
