Customs officers last night claimed to have smashed a multi-million pound smuggling operation with the seizure of thousands of litres of vodka in Northern Ireland.

One man was arrested when premises were searched in Keady, Co Armagh.

The move was mounted against organised criminals based in the Republic and the northern side of the Irish border, according to the NI Customs and Excise National Investigation Service.

Large amounts of documentation and a computer were recovered as well in raids, which also covered the Blackwatertown area of Tyrone and Armagh.

Customs staff, who were backed up in the searches by RUC officers, are investigating the alleged smuggling of spirits from Spain, Holland and Germany.
