FIVE OF the six local authorities targeted by a planning investigation ordered last month by Minister for the Environment John Gormley have said they will respond by today’s deadline.

Mr Gormley initiated the review of the councils’ planning systems because they were the subjects of “substantial complaints”, he said.

Mr Gormley chose Dublin and Cork city councils and Galway, Cork, Meath and Carlow county councils for review. Every council except Cork County Council, which did not respond to queries from The Irish Timesyesterday, said they would meet the deadline.

Each council was asked to provide information about planning systems and to answer specific questions about complaints and allegations. These will cover zoning, the scale and height of certain structures and concerns raised in local government audits.

In his reply, Cork city manager Joe Gavin said it was his policy that the council and its staff be as open as possible with the public.
