Nashville - A tornado struck the heart of Nashville late yesterday, blowing out windows in city centre buildings and injuring scores of people with flying glass and debris. Earlier, tornadoes which hit the same region killed four people, including a Tennessee couple who were sucked out of their mobile home.

The tornado which struck Nashville yesterday caused extensive damage to several neighbourhoods and brought down many power lines. One hospital was told to expect 50 injured. The tops of a number of buildings were blown off, according to a Nashville police officer, Mr Ron Riddle. He said the Centennial Park Medical Complex suffered heavy damage. A television reporter said an area along the Cumberland River near the city centre looked like a "war zone".
