Irish team captain Jim Moore set Belfast's Odyssey Arena alight when he battled his way to the semi-finals of the World Amateur Boxing Championships this afternoon.

After a thrilling contest with Turkey's Firat Karagollo which ended 24-24 Moore won a count back of punches 118-82 and will now go on to face American Anthony Thompson for a place in the final.

The Irishman was trailing after the first round as Karagollo speared home his long left lead and despite Moore's pressure in the second he was down 12-8 at the midway point.

After a great third round he had closed the gap to 18-16 and went on to dominate the fourth round which ultimately secured him a great victory.

Earlier there was double disappointment for the Ireland team as light-flyweight John Paul Kinsella was edged out 22-20 by Romanian Velicu Marian and bantamweight Damien McKenna was stopped in the third round by Turkey's European champion Agasi Mehm Agaguloglu.
