A Co Monaghan family is due to fly to the Canary Islands today following the weekend drowning of a 23-year-old man.

A Co Monaghan family is due to fly to the Canary Islands today following the weekend drowning of a 23-year-old man.

Brendan O'Reilly from Castleblayney died in the swimming pool of the Playa de l'Ingles apartment he was staying in yesterday, hours after watching the Fermanagh v Donegal Gaelic football match.

Mr O'Reilly was a well-known footballer in his home town and was on holiday with two local friends when the tragedy occurred.

The Irish embassy in Madrid is assisting the family.
