Gardai issued a warning last night to the public in Border areas to be vigilant after a second crudely assembled letter-bomb was delivered in Monaghan town.

A package was received in the post early yesterday by the chairman of Monaghan UDC, Mr Owen Smith, a leading Sinn Fein member.

Some days ago a similar package was sent to another family in the town. Yesterday Mr Smith alerted gardai after his suspicions were aroused and Army bomb disposal experts were called from Dundalk, who dealt with the device.
